What to Expect in Therapy

Therapy is a journey — and we’ll walk it together.

Starting therapy can feel overwhelming. You might be wondering: What will it be like? Will it really help? Will I feel safe sharing my story? These are all normal questions. At Amber Hullibarger & Associates, we want you to know: you don’t have to go through this alone.

Therapy is not just about talking — it’s about creating a space where you can be truly seen, heard, and supported without judgment. Our goal is to help you understand yourself better, find relief from what’s weighing you down, and discover new ways to move forward.

How We Begin

In our first sessions, we’ll:

  • Explore what’s bringing you to therapy right now

  • Talk about your needs, challenges, and hopes for the future

  • Set goals that feel meaningful and realistic

  • Create a plan together to guide our work

This isn’t about forcing you into a rigid program — it’s about building a path that fits you. You’ll always have a voice in the process.

What Our Sessions Look Like

Every session is a 50-minute conversation where you can bring whatever is on your heart or mind. Sometimes we’ll focus on processing painful memories. Other times we’ll talk about relationships, self-esteem, or coping with daily stress. You’ll notice that your therapist is active in the process — not just listening silently, but reflecting, asking questions, and gently challenging you when it helps you grow.

We may explore:

  • Relationships – how they shape you and how to make them healthier

  • Patterns of behavior – noticing what keeps you stuck and how to shift

  • Emotions in the body – learning how to recognize and respond to stress

  • Strengths – building on what’s already working in your life

Safety and Support (Even When It’s Hard)

One of our promises is that therapy with us will always be emotionally safe. That doesn’t mean it will always feel easy. Sometimes, talking about difficult things can stir up uncomfortable feelings. But that discomfort isn’t a sign that something is wrong — it’s often the beginning of healing.

When you learn how to listen to your emotions instead of pushing them away, you create the chance for real change. We’ll guide you through this gently, so you feel supported every step of the way.

Every Client’s Journey Is Unique

No two people are the same, and no two therapy journeys are alike. Your sessions are tailored to your needs, goals, and pace. Our therapists use a variety of approaches, including:

  • Humanistic & Existential Therapy – focusing on meaning, values, and self-discovery

  • Interpersonal Therapy – improving relationships and communication

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) – shifting unhelpful thought patterns

  • Trauma-Informed Care & EMDR – helping the brain and body heal from trauma

  • Mindfulness & Somatic Practices – learning how to calm the nervous system and feel more present

  • Grief & Loss Support – processing pain and finding hope

We’ll use the methods that work best for you, always checking in to make sure it feels right.

What You Can Gain From Therapy

Some people notice benefits after just a few sessions. Others experience more gradual growth. Both are normal. Possible benefits include:

  • Relief from stress, anxiety, or depression

  • Greater awareness of your emotions and triggers

  • More confidence and self-worth

  • Healthier relationships with family, friends, or partners

  • Healing from past trauma or loss

  • A stronger sense of who you are and where you’re going

Therapy is not a “quick fix,” but it is a powerful step toward building a life that feels calmer, stronger, and more connected.
